The species Viburnum (German name: Schneeball = snowball, because of the snowball-like panicles) are manifold. The shrubs are hardy In Middle Europe. They are summer- or evergreen. They greatly vary in shape, foliage and blossoms. In autumn and beginning of winter two kinds are especially valuable: Viburnum x bodnantense and Viburnum farreri. The latter one is available now. Both of them are valuable garden plants. Already in the end of November they start blooming, often already in fall. The main blooming takes place in spring, however, February through April. Viburnum farreri riginates in China. In the buds the blossoms are deeply pink, when opening they change to white-pink. Set it near a window or a way that is frequented even in winter, then you can enjoy its blossoms and especially its fragrance. Demands to the soil are low, any cultivation soil will do. The location should have sun or dappled shade. Placed in a vase, the branches will let you enjoy the sweet fragrance even inside the house. A further attraction: the leaves start out bronze, turn to deep green and before fall to a fascinating red.
